How is this bullying not moderated? That just seems weird. I’ve always felt Mastodon kinda fails at moderation in this aspect. He should go to Lemmy instead.

This story is already strange and OPs post history contradicts it. Seems fake.
I think it is because Windows has many subsystems, it’s just that you don’t hear about most of them aside from WSL.
So it is referring to the particular Windows Subsystem (of which there are many) that can run or emulate Linux.
There is nothing pointless about following your passions - in fact I’d say that is the only point of life. It’s the opposite of pointless.
Maybe you need to reframe it as not failure, but progress. See how you get better and closer, not how you didn’t reach the goal. It’s about the journey.
I don’t think it’s immature - I wish more people had that kind of motivation.
But you say you’re entering your 30s. I’d just like to remind you how long time you actually still have. I studied computer science myself and I had multiple friends at the university in their 40s. People do switch up their careers if they want it enough. It is possible.
I love programming and will continue my computer hobbies for life. I will never make a profession out of it
Why do you say that? Is it by choice or do you not see how you could make it a career?
I’m slowly coping with the fact that all my work will ultimately influence very nearly nothing at all…
What kind of impact were you hoping for? I mean lots of jobs have little “influence” - I would actually say almost all jobs. But that doesn’t mean we are not all part of collective progress.
A pi with multiple terabytes of storage?
I’m in Europe so that probably hasn’t changed here… So what’s the benefit of 2025 vs the previous generations l wonder 🤔. I’m considering getting this as a used car so 2025 model is not really an option.
How is the 2025 version different than previous years?
I mean if you truly intend to stay in a country for many years, shouldn’t you learn the language? Also just for your own sake.
Denmark seems to fit fairly well and there are some English-only jobs in Copenhagen. I have a lot of colleagues that don’t speak Danish.
Denmark is close I would like to say.
Lived in a dorm for 5 years while studying. Makes you confront that anxiety quite often and eventually you get more comfortable.
Basically exposure therapy :P
What is insane, is how many people studied computer science but are totally unable to apply mathematics to the problems they try to solve.
Could you elaborate on this? My experience during my computer science education was that a lot of maths was required, but just usually not the same kind of maths as most of the rest of mathematics, because continuous stuff doesn’t apply most of the time.
I think a big difference between the way maths and programming is done however is the way it is written. Mathematics is usually about stating a relation as an equation, i.e. x = y^2. But programming can’t just state the relation, it needs to also state how to compute that relation. Honestly my confusion is that maths has never focused more on the computation part of it, it seems very weird to me.
Why are you making such a strawman? Using an AI model to completely generate a picture is obviously not the same as using the tools you mention here.
Well, that might be the cause. Kinda scary you get recommendations like that just due to no history.
Wow your YouTube recommendations are very different from mine.
You can make your own alternatives, that’s the difference. If you think the mods/admins of those comms/instances aren’t doing well, then you could do better yourself. That’s the freedom that the fediverse gives you. You could not do the same on Reddit.
There’s also a link to Matrix, which I’m guessing is the preferred way to jump in and ask questions about how to contribute.
Yes but asking directly instead of consuming already-written guidelines is a much higher psychological hill to climb and doesn’t feel welcoming. You need to be very passionate to go to Matrix. Also, frankly speaking, UX people are very unlikely to have a user on Matrix or even know what it is or how it works. Developers on the other hand can easily figure this out. You need to be mindful of tech literacy when you’re trying to cater to UX people - they won’t know anything about Matrix probably.
In general, I recommend coming with the intention of being assigned work
I don’t think that’s bad, but for developers this is very easy with all the guidelines and the “good first issues” and all that. For UX people, none of these resources exist.
Where would you naturally look for this? With developers it’s easy, you look for “CONTRIBUTING.md” or similar in the repo, as well as hints from templates in issues and PRs. Some will have extensive style guides and whatnot, but most are pretty bare bones.
Should this go on the main website? Somewhere at the start of the technical docs? In the repo in a special place linked from the root?
At the very least this could be in the contributing guidelines on GitHub, but I think having it on the main website (a place much more familiar and friendly to non-technical people) is much better.
What about tooling? Should projects set up something like penpot (found after a search for FOSS Figma)? Or are designers okay with images on a wiki or something? Is it reasonable to ask them to submit a GitHub issue and engage that way (they could link to something else)?
I don’t know, I’m not a UX person. Ask them when they arrive. But I would think they can probably figure out to interact on GitHub issues if directed to do so. Developers intuitively know “Oh I want to contribute so I’ll need a GitHub account and then need to go look at issues” but UX people don’t know this.
To me, linking a chat and the repo is enough, but maybe it’s not.
I definitely don’t think that’s enough - UX people probably don’t even know what a “repo” is.
Depends on what communities and instances you frequent I would say. You can find nicely moderated places if you care to look for them.
