Ah yes, the famously communist Russian Federation. The RF is nakedly an imperial fascist regime that doesn’t even have communist window dressing, it boggles the mind that self-proclaimed communists and anti-imperialists support them.

  • I am not a native speaker, but my knowledge of the english language is better than most people i know, having no issues reading scientific papers and similar complex documents. Some wikipedia article intros, especially in the mathematics, are not comprehensible for anyone but mathematicians, and therefore fail the objective to give the average person an overview of the material.

It’s fine for me if i am not able to grasp the details of the article because of missing prerequisite knowledge (and i know how to work with integrals and complex numbers!), but the intro should at least not leave me wondering what the article is about.

  • The top Youtube comment by Ridley Combs explains it pretty well:

FFmpeg maintainer here, and the details behind the caption decoding issues you’re seeing in VLC are complex and horrific. They largely stem from how the EIA-608 caption format expects text to be laid out in a monospace grid onscreen, which isn’t really how the text rendering stacks used for modern subtitling work (this is probably why changing the font caused problems on those Sony players); beyond that, the behavior can just end up pretty complex, and there’s no convenient public-domain corpus of sample files for open-source software developers to test against. These kinds of issues also affect the Japanese (ARIB) and European (Teletext) formats to varying extents. These days, a lot of the focus ends up being on converting the text into modern Unicode text formats, styled using modern techniques, so direct rendering of the legacy formats hasn’t had as much attention lately.

  • Sorry to break this to you, but the people writing bots can also get over this barrier very easily - see that link to the faceswap in this thread? That makes it possible for every person with a bit of tech understanding or at least a bit of persistence to ignore this. it’s not even a speed bump for people whose job (yes, job) it is to write bots.

This does nothing to make the bots go away, but it gives Meta a full facescan, which is the fucking last thing to hand over to anyone - a data breach at Meta would mean that everyone around you will get scammed by videocallers with your face; not even your bank manager would be able to detect that something is off if he knows you personally (a short phone call with you to get a voice snippet makes the illusion perfect!)

The political shenanigans in the US are also a reason to NOT give facescans out to anyone.

The solution to bots does not lie in giving up your anonymity. There are no shortcuts here that don’t do more harm than good.

  • i can at least tell you that the mood swings do get less the older you get. My 20s were by far the worst phase, the 30 started to get better and in my 40s i “mellowed out”, but it still hits me a few weeks per year.

If you have those thoughts without much of a break, i would really recommend getting a solid diagnosis (personality disorders? add/adhd?) and have a hard look at the stress factors in your life and how to cut back on them, ideally with a seasoned therapist.

  • My personal experience (recurring major depression since childhood & cluster C personality disorder): Near complete drug & alcohol abstinence (i was a real pothead starting the day with a bong hit, and drunk at least once, but more often 2-3 times a week - selfmedicating gets pretty selfdestructive after a while), a lot of time and more therapy. Medication is a stopgap measure or to smoothen mood swings; what really helped me regarding my depression (and a lot with my other issues) was a therapy session per week for the last 4 years, 1 visit to the psychiatrist per month, and 2 group therapy sessions per week.

And time helps! The older you get, the less wild your mood swings get. Starting from my 30s i noted a distinct reduction in the extend of my depressive phases, and with my 40s i was able to cut back on a lot of my medication (i still take Duloxetin and Lyrica).

But for me it was mostly finding the right therapist and keeping at it with him (i have serious issues with developing relationships; it’s far easier to “reset” things by not meeting people more than a few times) for years.

I am lucky that i am recognized by my social insurance system as not able to work, because i will never be stable enough to cope with the pressure of even a part time job for more than a few months before i am a mental wreck again. In the US i would probably be dead by now.
